Who invented the first mechanical computer?
- William Oughtred
- Henry Maudslay
- Alessandro Volta
- Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage was a mathematician, scientist, inventor, and political economist in the early 1800s. He is widely considered as the father of the modern computer. He invented and designed it but died before building the first mechanical computer. It wasn't until the 1970s that computer engineers realized the magnitude of his accomplishments. The Babbage Difference Engine was at last completed in 2002. Babbage published nearly 90 scientific papers between 1813 and 1868. Very aware of the need for accurate calculations in engineering and other professions, Babbage invented and designed calculating mechanical engines. His goal was to decrease the risk of human error.
