The Winter Palace is the most famous building in St. Petersburg, Russia. Not only does it overshadow everything in Palace Square and along the south bank of the Neva River, it is also a cultural historical landmark. It serves as a central political symbol in Russian history. Empress Anna Ioannovna first commissioned the court architect Rastrelli to construct the palace in 1731.
