What language was “Silent Night” originally written in?
The well-known Christmas carol "Silent Night" was first performed on Christmas Eve way back in 1818. It was first known as "Stille Nacht!" which is "Silent Night!" in German. In 1859, Bishop John Freeman Young published the English version of the carol and today it is one of the most popular Christmas carols of all time. It might be hard to believe, but since 1818 the carol has been translated into almost 140 languages.
