George Kelly "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on July 18, 1895. He was an obscure criminal until he participated in the infamous kidnapping of Oklahoma oil man Charles F. Urschel in 1933. To build his reputation as a bank robber, his wife bought him a machine gun and coined the nickname for him.
