Why did the United States bring back its navy?
- To ward off Spaniards
- To fight Pirates
When George Washington started the Navy in 1775, it was originally to combat the Brits. It died in 1785 due to loss of funding (and the fact that our Navy was a joke compared to the British one) but was revived again in 1794. Why? Because Pirates! Yep, American sailors were being captured by these sea-hooligans and held at ransom. By the time it happened twice, Congress had had enough and decided to relaunch its Navy in order to keep the pirates at, well, bay.
- To rally against Native Americans
- To bring slaves from overseas
