Who is the only U.S. President and U.S. Vice President to never be elected to the office?
- George Washington
- Gerald Ford
America’s 38th president, Gerald Ford (1913-2006) took office on August 9, 1974. After vice president Spiro Agnew’s resigned (due to criminal charges), Ford was appointed to vice president under President Richard Nixon. After Nixon resigned (due to the Watergate scandal), Ford became the first unelected president in the nation’s history. Gerald Rudolph Ford, was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr.. His mother divorced her first husband and later married a man named Gerald R. Ford, who she renamed her son after. Thus, Gerald Ford is the only President to preside with a name completely different from the one he was given at birth and, probably for the better, because President King would have been awkward.
- Harry S. Truman
- Richard Nixon
