When did Casper the Friendly Ghost debut?

New York-based author and illustrator Seymour Reit created the cartoon phantom in 1940 for a short story. Famous Studios, an early animation division within Paramount Pictures, purchased the rights to Casper the Friendly Ghost soon after and, in 1945, released the first cartoon featuring the character.
