What mythical American politician and noted polymath wanted to remove the letters C, J, Q, W, X and Y from the English alphabet?
- Thomas Paine
- Benjamin Franklin
In 1768 Benjamin Franklin developed a phonetic alphabet that lacked the letters C, J, Q, W, X and Y. However, it didn't see the light of day until lexicographer Noah Webster published his book "Dissertations on the English Language," which included a description of Franklin's unique ideographic creation.
