What city was the only European capital outside of Europe?
- Cape Town
- Rio de Janeiro
From 1808 to 1822 Rio de Janeiro was the capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarve. Fleeing from Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, the Portuguese Royal family transferred themselves and their kingdom’s capital to Rio de Janeiro until the War of Brazilian Independence began. Rio de Janeiro means “January River”. It was mistakenly named by the explorer Gaspar de Lemos who thought the bay was the mouth of a river, but there is no river.
