In "The Wizard of Oz", what is Dorothy's last name?
Though the story of Oz is quite sweet, what you may not know is its heartbreaking history. Frank L. Baum named the character after his niece, Dorothy Louise Gage, who died of "brain congestion" when she was only five months old. Baum's wife, Maud, a mother of five boys, was so distraught over the loss that she required medical attention after. Baum hoped that naming his newest character after the child may help his wife feel better and the story of traveling over the rainbow was born. Source: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
