How much did gasoline cost in 1970?

  • $0.10
  • $0.15
  • $0.35 correct

In 1970, the average cost of a gallon of gasoline was $0.35. (Kind of makes you want to cry just thinking about it, doesn't it?) But if you fast forward three years, the Middle East slapped on an oil embargo and prices went up 37%. $0.48 doesn't seem like a lot of money for gasoline, but the problem wasn't so much the price as the fact that the supply became grossly limited. Gas stations were booking by appointment only, thievery ensued, it was madness at the pumps! Thank goodness our qualms with the Middle East have ended and we have more reasonable gas prices today. Oh, wait... Source: The Atlantic
