During what month is Earth closest to the sun?

  • January correct

We know. We know. That has to be a mistake! The sun is hot, right? So why is it that we are coldest when we are closest to the sun? Our seasonal weather patterns don't have much to do with how close the planet is to the sun but more to do with which way we are tilting towards it. During January, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, creating winter and the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun creating summer. This is also why Australian Santa looks like he's having such a better time than the American one. Source: NASA
